Directed Reading/Thinking Activity (DRTA)
The directed reading/thinking activity (DRTA) encourages readers to engage actively in a three-step comprehension cycle.
1.Sample the Text
2.Make Predictions
3. Sample the text to confirm or correct previous predictions.
To use the DRTA, teachers give students a text selection and askthem to read the title, a few sampled lines of text, and examine the pictures to develop hypotheses about the text. Readers generate hypotheses as they read from the text and from their own experiential backgrounds.

The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 2th. but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could begin at ten o'clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner.

T'keyah- In this story you really have to be focused on the meaning. I feel like this story focuses on how people really act when it comes to the lottery and how they stoned Tessie for having the black mark on her papper I did not understand.
I am not sure if you are referring to the "black mark on the paper" in the sense of Literary Symbolism. I have to confess I did not do well in my English lit course where the instructor wanted the students to discuss the symbolism in the reading assignment. I needed to purchase A Dictionary of Symbols by J.E. Cirlot to get through the class. I did, however, learn to find repeating objects discussed in a reading as a clue for symbol-isms. For example, in the book Cold Mountain, the author repeatedly mentions three black crows following the main character. I took this as a symbolism of the three crosses where Jesus was crucified, hence, this would come to pass for the character in the book. However, Native Americans opinions of the Crow suggests "Raven symbolism of wisdom and knowledge-keeping. . ." (anne)
Michael N. - Overall, this is a very unorganized passage. There are many mistakes including; incomplete thoughts, incomplete sentences, run-on sentences and sentences that begin with conjunctions. Also, the story isn't told in great chronological order.
I agree with your Editing Eagle eye, there are errors in the text. The lack of chronological order is difficult or annoying for some readers. I have come to think of text that uses flashbacks or foreshadowing almost like hyper-linking that we use today. (anne)
Heather- I think that this story should be a little longer, to actually understand what is going on. It seems like the town only gathers around once a year for the lottery, and it is an important thing to them.
I agree in that the author seems to spend time giving the reader many details and then ends the story abruptly. However, does the author do so to increase the impact or to shock the reader for the end of the story? (anne)
Carli L. - I think the story was written poorly. There were so many errors I could hardly keep up and got stuck on the same line several times. I also think Old Man Warner needs to be put in the nursing home and the whole town needs to quit the lottery. Some traditions don't always need to stay around.
Sherika H.- In the beginning of the story it seemed that the lottery was betrayed as an opportunity for the villagers to participate in. Reading the article more it kind of became mandatory for the villagers to participate, but as the story ended it seemed that the lottery became something that was cast apon a person. I think if the story was longer than it would have gave a better definition of what the lottery was.
The author gave a lot of details in the story, but there wasnt to much detail on what the lottery really was.
Jovaughn G.- My thoughts and final conclusion to this article is that it was unorganized, has grammatical errors and also of target where in the story is not on topic. It seems like the lottery was a tradition for the villagers from the days of Old Man Warner. It seems to me that the author put various activities in the article to show the lives of the villagers. The author didn't put more emphasis on the lottery to give us a brief idea on the villagers point of view with the lottery.
Jessica Carter- My own personal comment on this short summary is, there is not much to say about this small paragraph. Some of the things that were talked bout in the story were confusing, because nobody is able to understand whats happening in the story. So this story needs more detail of whats happening in the story and whats the meaning. Because when they say lottery i think bout money,fame,rich people, and happiness, but this story is talking about villagers that have won the lottery are wanting to get their money from winning.

Daniel Cornelius- As I read the short paragraph it took me a short minute to understand the concept of the lottery ticket. Me personally I have no problem with a lottery. I just belive that is very rare to win a lottery ticket.

The Lottery
